Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which was held in Indio, California, during two weekends in April, is famous for it’s lineup of bands. Founded in 1999, it is now known for its fashions and celebrity attendees (actresses Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth, and actor Robert Pattinson among them) as much as it is for its music acts, including Blur, Phoenix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Vampire Weekend. Now a hackathon has been incorporated to attract a different type of attendee. One who goes to innovate
Hackathons are intense, time-sensitive incubators where designers and coders race to develop new apps and tech products, often for a cash prize — have become something of a regular feature at music festivals. Though not officially part of Coachella, there’s an emerging subculture that will bring the geeks out to hang with the cool kids and that is happening to kick off Coachella.
